Multicast PIM-SM routing and RP

Tue Feb 08, 2011 1:05 am

Hi everyone.

I am hopeful someone can tell me the correct configuration for using multicast with rOS. What I have is a pretty good size IP camera network using a powerRouter 732. I just upgraded the os to 4.16. While I seem to have gotten the MC to work there are a couple of things that are bothering me. in the RP tab, shouldnt this be the router? or should I be listing every switch on my network as an RP as I have 8 switches that are all star back via fiber to my MDF head end switch. Interesting enough, when I just enable the head end switch as the only RP and set the priority to 1, the traffic seems to smooth out and looks rather good as I can see there are 40 MC groups running through the switch. When I enable the other switches as RPs, the traffic seems to flood all over the place and while some switches only have two cameras connected to them I can see 11 MC groups have joined that switch and I have poor performance on my client machine that is running the video management software. The server running the video management platform is nested in the same rack as the head end switch. These are Layer 2 Dell 5424 switches with IGMP snooping enabled.

what is the correct way to configure this? did I have it right by just having my head switch as the only RP? or am I missing something and should be listing all my switches as RPs?

Thanks!!!

RP should be a router and there must be only one RP in your network.
Also it is recommended to disable IGMP snooping on switches.

most cases we have seen snooping brakes multicast network when IGMP-proxy is used.
