UPS monitoring via USB port on RB2XX?

Tue Jul 12, 2005 1:34 am

Quite a lot of the UPS's now come with USB cables for monitoring. Any chance we could get a driver in the RouterOS to allow monitoring a UPS plugged into the USB port? Something we could script against so that we could have a MT at a remote site send us email when the UPS reports a power failure, or that the batteries need replacing?

Is the USB protocol standardised?
i.e. do they all report the same values -

I've never researched the protocol(s), I don't know.

Hmmm
I get the sense these MT guys are so busy improving the RouterOS for us, it'd be really great if someone could have a look at the protocol and say "hey, just send the box X, Y, Z and listen for blah blah" and they'd probably just add it straight on.
If it isn't a "common standard", then best to just support 1 or 2 main brands.

I think it is an issue, particularly on remote radio base sites or repeater sites.

It could also be that they'll have less interest since they dropped the USB port from the 5XX series. Unless they plan on dropping support for PCMCIA radios though, the RB230 should be around for awhile and it's got two USB ports.

I can't get a APC Back-UPS XS with USB to work with 2.9. I can see the UPS under the USB tab on System Resources, but I never get to select the USB port under the System UPS Add entry dialog. All I can select is serial0 or serial1. The motherboard is using Intel 82801 USB controllers.

Can anyone else get this to work?

Because this model doesn't have an RS-232 serial interface on it, only a USB. The only cable it comes with is USB. UPS's are eliminating the RS232 ports in favor of USB and Mikrotik must adapt and support USB interfaces better.
