Could it be made to work under wine?
Or else, is there a similar tool for linux, that allows to place hosts on the screen and watch ther alive status?

Wine Compatability....
Will there be more work on Dude so that it's not completely crippled under Wine? Devices don't have names, there is no way to add links and so on and so on... Please some work on it under wine?

Text on network maps is visible when using wine 0.9.4, maybe you should
upgrade.
What do you mean by not being able to add links? You should click on '+'
button, then 'Link', and then drag a line from one item to another. Please be
more specific about your problem. Note that operations causing network map to
redraw are pretty slow under wine so you should be patient when dragging a
line.

Ok, so now I am running 0.9.5 latest compiled code and now I can make links. BUT when looking at the maps from Dude run under wine on a Fedora 4 installation the boxes are all small and have no text in them. This is using remote to attach to the server, local attach fails. IF I look at the server from a dude on a windows system, the labels are all there, from the same server run under wine! Next I am going to remove all my wine configuration and start over.
It is important that you have some fonts in your
~/.wine/fake_windows/Windows/Fonts or whatever whatever directory you are
using for windows.
msttcorefonts package on debian contains some of windows default fonts
And if that still does not work you may want to run 'regedit' on your wine
computer and look for key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts
or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Fonts
and enter some mappings from face name to font file name manually. Don't know
if that works, but 'theoretically' this is place where on actual Windows
computer is stored font face name to file name mapping, e.g installing new
font adds new entry in this key.

我试过没有,然后移动窗口的佛nts into .wine/drive_c/windows/fonts. Fonts look normal, and I chose a font for the appearance out of the font chooser just in case. I am getting icons for the device in the box, but most importantly not getting text for the bandwidths on the links.. I have selected the info to be displayed and it all works fine from dude under windows... Just dude under wine... Same server in both cases, server running under wine... Also under wine the items ( device, subnet, link, etc...) are in a list whereas under windows they are icons to select. That struck me as strange...

Link labels on network map use different font for link labels than for item
labels. It uses Lucida Console by default. Maybe you should try changing it
by right clicking a link, then choose 'Appearance', then click on 'Font' and
choose some other font - for example the same that you are using for item
labels and you are sure that it works.
Remember that you can change appearance of all links at once (except those
that has been changed manually) by changing default font in global server
configuration. To do that you click on 'Settings' button besides 'Undo' and
'Redo', go to 'Map' tab, then click 'Link Appearance', then you will see font
setting that applies to all links.

No problems running dude in wine here
