Does the CSS610-8G-2S+ SFP+ port with S+RJ10 support 2.5GbE speed?

Tue Jan 17, 2023 5:59 am

As per the topic subject, I have the CSS610-8G-2S+ switch running SwOS Lite 2.14 and I want to know if the SFP+ port with the S+RJ10 inserted will support 2.5GbE speed on this device? The device on the other end will be the RB4011iGS+ running ROS 7.7 with an S+RJ10 inserted into it's SFP+ port, and there will be a CAT-6 ethernet cable connecting the two devices which is approximately 80m in length.

Summary of the planned topology:

CSS610-8G-2S+ (SFP+ port with S+RJ10 inserted) --> CAT-6 cable --> RB4011iGS+ (SFP+ port with S+RJ10 inserted)

Please confirm if this will work at 2.5GbE speeds.

In theory, cat6 cables should support 5Gbps on up to 100m long stretches, 2.5Gbps as well. So if your cable is installed fine, it should work.

Beware though that S+RJ10 modules can get very hot ... how hot depends on speed (higher speed, higher temperature) and cable length. You may have to manually set speed to 2.5Gbps (if cable is fine, then both SFP+ modules might negotiate 5Gbps speed which means higher temperature). If cooling of module is not adequate (AFAIK both devices you're about to use are passively cooled), then module might overheat.

If you have any flexibility, I suggest you to install optical cable (multi mode will do, it can be up to 550m long) and use optical SFP+ modules ... it'll work at 10Gbps and optical modules tend to use much less power (and thus produce less heat).

Please confirm if this will work at 2.5GbE speeds.
如果我没记错的话,选择2.5 Gb / s over 10 Gb/s was not so easy to set, due to autoneg issues.

Thank you for the replies. Yes I am a little concerned about the heat for those SFPs. Oh how I wish I ran optical cable when I built my house, but alas this particular connection goes between two rooms that are on opposite end of the house from each other, and they are on the ground floor of a two storey home, so running a new cable is likely impossible...

As for trying to set the maximum speed, will I be able to do that in SwOS Lite for the CSS610?

I have the CSS610-8G-2S+ switch. Using the Mikrotik S+RJ10, the SwOS lite gives you the option to set manually only 1G, 100M & 10M speeds. On auto speed mode (and only on auto) you can get 10G, 5G & 2.5G speeds. The other side is connected to my RB4011 with another S+RJ10, and on the RB I can set the speed manually to 2.5G no problem. Just on the SwOS lite you can't (you have to rely on the other side switch for that manual speed setting).

Thank you so much for this information. This is exactly what I needed to know!

Hello World !!!

Sorry for picking up a solved thread, but I think my problem is
a bit related:

How do I set the 10G for the CSS610 having a SWOS-device on the
other side (not SWOS lite)?

So, it´s impossible to connect two CSS610 with 10G without a third
device in the middle? WTF!

I think if you are going from SwOS to SwOS, both with 10G ports, then you will get a 10G link without having to set anything. I assume that's what you want?

That sounds good, thank you.
Will test that the next days.

Digging up this old post as I have a related issue…

It seems no matter what I do it tries to establish a 10g link or no link at all.

Even if I turn swos to 1gig on CSS610 and tell routeros to only negotiate 1gig on rb5009 I get no link.
If I autoneg on CSS610 and then try to force 1/2.5/5gig on rb5009 I get no link, if I force 10g I get the link.

My problem is I want to link these two further apart on a cat5e cable and they should be able to achieve 5gig but it isn’t capable of 10Gig.

How can I solve?

Same - I could only get it to connect at 10gig. I have just left it like that since the link has been stable, albeit a bit hot!
