cap2n / wAP in hotel corridors

Fri Mar 11, 2016 3:08 pm

We have been using capsman with cap2n in hotel corridors since they were released, and they have worked pretty good.
They still work good, but recently we have received an increasing number of complaints about instability and bad connectivity, which seems to be mainly from users with modern smartphones.
We don't see the problems ourselves when measuring and testing from our laptops and typical android phones, but for sure there seems to be some new issue that hasn't been there before. It might be related mainly to iPhones, but we're not sure (and don't use iPhones regularly ourselves..).
This is happening in unrelated sites, both where they are still on old routerOS levels and where we have upgraded to the latest, so I do believe it is related to the users' devices rather than our networks.

一个想法是,也许新手机加大dema公司nds on the network, and 1 chain in the cap2n is no longer sufficient?
Maybe we should start rolling out wAP from now on instead? (We need something that can be put in ceiling or wall without cables hanging out..). It is a bit more powerful and has 2 chains.

I have searched for any indications of others seeing the same trend, but haven't found much..
Any similar experience or thoughts out there..?

Are you using WMM? What's your preamble mode?

What does "bad connectivity" means? Low signal? iphones get unregistered? captive portal doesn't show up?

djdrastic, you referred to a rather old ROS version... I use all sort of iOS devices myself, and have installations where 80% of devices are iOS based without problems.

Last "problem" was getting low battery life from devices, and that was fixed in recent versions AFAIK.

No WMM, and only 802.11gn/20MHz.
I'm not sure myself what "bad connectivity" means, and that's why I'm asking if others have seen a similar pattern with increasing reports.. It's the hotel staff that reports guests saying this, and I have never seen any issues myself so have not had a chance to check any specifics. There are also nothing special in the historical logs to point out any special issue.

Some places where we have AP's constrained to 802.11g seems to have less issues, and that's why I'm thinking if there is some compatibility- or functional issue on some newer devices when mixing with 802.11n.

Without knowing what's the specific problem users experience is going to be hit and miss...

I'd ask one of the affected installations to contact you ASAP when such a problem happens, so that you can connect and at least try to track if the problem is related to wireless or not.

Or at least to note down exact device model and version, so that you can get an identical device to try to reproduce it, it will be useful also to isolate your field of research.

Have you noticed any significant increase of usage that may overload the cAPs?

wAP would definitely be an improvement over cAP; it has a more powerful CPU (I estimate double the power), two chains, and it triples the TX power in the N department.
