It is a proprietary "WiFi extension" on the later chipsets, which "supports low SNR operation". Atheros claims a 3x range extension.
Not sure whether this is supported in MT, I guess not yet, I would expect to see an 'XR' switch to enable/disable.

thanks for the links, i have seen d-link has boxes (e.g. DWL-2100AP) claiming to use XR. as the white paper states, it works by improving sensibility down to -105 dB and lowering bandwith below 1mbps so it seems to me a technique mostly for the low-cost 802.11g market.

if it is an atheros chipset feature, it should probably not too difficult to make an XR option-switch. nice to have, but not very important.

as i said: a nice to have low-cost-market feature.
i know what a good receive-amplifier with -105dB costs, therefore i do not think atheros is using such one. the white paper does not mention any other radio parameters too.

Hi Matthias,

I think you have not read about Atheros XR. The receive sensitivity is really this good.

Having XR support means that connections will hold on for another 10db and won't just drop at -92.

This is very important where we can only use 5.2-5.3 GHz at max EIRP of 250mW.

Look at Atheros website!
