Got a new feature: It doesn't instantly crash, in either modes (if it shows APs or Clients) selecting one entry for about 20 seconds leads to a memory leak (WinBox starts eating memory and using 100% of one CPU core), freezes and it eventually disconnects from the router when it hits ~200MB of RAM used.

It is a fatal problem for me but it appears to get little attention. Other users confirm it, and/or have been bitten by it.

No issues with resizing columns in any of the windows, never had. Maybe your graphics driver or emulation thing if you're using wine.

@pe1chl can you describe the issue in more detail as I want to test as well. I have not sizing issues of columns but I might not use the functions as you.
I know you wrong once here but I do not understand what the bug is.

You need to have a router with a lot of activity on it. Then you open a screen which shows lots of items (firewall rules, open connections, etc) and which shows counters.
These counters will be frequently updated because of the activity.
Now, you put the mouse cursor on a column separator in the header and keep the mouse button pressed, because you want to change the size of the column.
In a version that works OK, you can now drag the column separator and the column width will follow it smoothly.
In a version 3.22 and higher, you will see that the column width changes whenever the counter update takes place. So the column changes width randomly, and when you release the mouse button you end up with column with another width than you want.

In the "firewall filter" window it is even worse, because there you can drag lines in the firewall up and down. When you press the mouse button on a line to prepare to drag it up or down, it will jump to a random location at the next counter update, and when you then release the mouse button you will change your firewall (because order of rules is important). You still have the opportunity to quickly drag the moved line to the original position when you see this happen, before you release the button. But it is a race between the counter updates and your mouse action.
Of course you can click "undo" after you inadvertently moved a rule to the wrong place, but when you have bad luck you can lock yourself out and will not be able to do that unless you had safe mode enabled.

I think it is an important bug. I use Linux and wine, but others have confirmed that the problem also occurs under Windows.

I went from 3.27 to 3.29 so it was very tempting to make the step. Thanks for the new stuff making things easier especially the Windows button to find my lost windows.

@pe1chl: I cannot replicate this per say but I think the key here is traffic volume. As I use Fasttrack and do not have crazy number of session I do not see that much updates in the GUI. But I tested to reload a blocklist I have with over 80 000 entries which removes them and then reloads them and while that is running I most definitely experience lag in GUI and see a CPU spike on my PC for a few seconds. As this spike in CPU happens the mouse cursor stops moving and I cannot readjust. So I believe I can slightly reproduce the behavior but not the issue.

Mikrotik employees use Winbox from their MacBooks using Wine.

I think the bug described by pe1ch is dependent on large updates in the GUI. I cannot replicate the issue either but I use fasttrack meaning GUI does not update that much. However if I do a large address list import I can sort of experience the issue but not with the same outcome.

I am trying to setup an access to our router for MikroTik so they can try to reproduce it (although I really cannot believe the setup has anything to do with this, they keep insisting on it), but when I created a VPN and installed winbox 3.29 on a 1920x1080 laptop I cannot reproduce it there.
But on my 2560x1440 desktop system it immediately fails... completely unworkable on some screens.
All of them run Debian 10, with wine.
I'm really trying to find what is the way to reproduce it, as I really want to update winbox for the new features in this version (which I also have requested) and I also require it for testing 7.1rc1.
But tweaking column widths in this version is almost impossible for me, and modifying firewall rules is outright dangerous!

I would already be happy when the whole updating pauses during mouse-down, I do not need to see the counters and uptimes updated while I move things around.

In the Log window, the column width of the "Message" column is some arbitrary small value, and it is not saved in the session either.
Everytime I open the Log window (or when it is re-opened as part of a saved session on winbox startup) I need to resize the Message column to extend to the right of the window.
I think either the column width should be saved (as it is for all other windows) or better: the Message column should automatically be sized to use the remaining space in the Log window.
(I usually have a Log window full-sized as backdrop for all my work in winbox, so the window is quite large but half of it is not used unless I extend the Message column)

I have asked this before, and had it previously working - but is it possible in the main winbox view to have 'show categories' use the WHOLE field its sorted by rather than just first character? I just tried it on my laptop (FHD/1080p) and I cannot reproduce it.

My desktop system has 2 monitors, a 2560x1400 where I am working and a 1920x1080 which in fact is my TV.
But at work I have only a single 1600x1200 monitor connected on the system which exhibits this behavior.
It is an Xtightvnc X server, that is different from what I have at home (where it is a normal server directly driving the videocard).
I will try some experiments later today to see if I can find what is the difference that triggers it...

Never knew about that capability in Torch. However just tried that in 3.29 on a Windows 10 PC, and it did not work.

W.r.t. the "mouse dragging problem", I now have found that I can only reproduce it with an existing session file (.viw file) that exhibits the problem.
When I temporarily move that session file and start a session, then scale and position things the same as in the original setting, set the same filter, etc, it cannot be reproduced.
So that sort of confirms that it is either some setting in winbox that I previously made and did not make in the new session, or it is something in the session file that maybe got in there in an older version of winbox and not in the current one.
I have the issue on two different systems that do not share session files, and that connect to two different sets of routers.
Of course it would be no fun to start from scratch, setup all those things in the sessions, and then after a lot of work accidentally hit something that makes it come back again.
Oskars asked if I use "show categories" and while I sometimes use that, it is not enabled in the windows that exhibit the problem (like IP->firewall->filter), but it is in others like IP->firewall->address list. Toggling it on or off in a session that exhibits the problem does not make it change.

Send the problematic session file to MikroTik? maybe they can analyze it for whatever causes this? (and reproduce the issue on their end with your session file) ?:)

Its also a lot of work and harder to maintain - I've built web-apps like this and inside the DOM there is no inherent (read: Good) window manager - there are some libraries out there, and there are oddities between different browsers in those libraries - I rolled my own and it fuckin suuuuuuucks to write and maintain events through the windows (in my case the windows are movable iframes with borders)

Winbox 3.29 crashed like a few dozen times. I clear "%appdata/roaming/mikrotik/winbox". then it works for like a little time. then crash loops again.

Netfig the other hand. The used tech stack there is sooooooooo old. it has a beard to the floor long. BUT that makes it so stable after all. If your app works in Internet Explorer 11 - then it works in 99,99999999% of recent serious browsers. And webfig looks like it already ran in IE6 back in XP. So thats one of thr most battle-tested web-application on the f*** enterprise market or even the whole planet after all. yeah

I have seen other web interfaces that come quite close to what winbox does, at most they are slower but functionally they are the same.
(i.e. multiple windows active at the same time, customizable layout of each window, "copy" functionality, etc)

If you are talking about resizing the column width, I have experienced that behavior too. Trying to resize columns in registration table of capsman gets crazy, and then behavior carries over to other windows of winbox, you need to close all instances of winbox to get it back to normal.

Always good to have another datapoint! Be careful, it also affects moving lines up or down in windows where that is supported, like the firewall filters and route filters.
When you encounter it there, it is more than a display issue, it can affect the function of the router.
In the meantime it looks like it is somehow stored in the "session file", the .viw file kept for each winbox session. Maybe it is related to session files created with an older winbox version? When I remove the session file I have difficulty re-creating the problem. But of course I don't like to do that because I lose all customizations done in winbox.

If I may add, from the UI design perspective, wouldn't it be better to have the 'Windows' menu item at the top level menu list together with the 'Session,' 'Settings,' and 'Dashboard' menu items? Then the 'Close All Windows' command under the 'Sessions' top-level menu item then be moved to under the new 'Window' meu item. Also 'Minimise All' and/or 'Arrange All' commands could be added for ease of use.

I like the idea of your second suggestion, no possible room for error,
so if it the button says start one can assumed its stopped, if the button says stop, one can assume its started.
In general there is nothing more frustrated than having two polar opposite buttons close together on any interface ( classic save and delete )

Like the already existand Enable/Disable button on firewall filter, nat, interfaces, etc.



The worst is (I know the existance of safe mode)

I have a similar issue with the addition of Window button. This added button messes with my musclememory so when I want to start a new Winbox I now click Exit instead.

Yes, I would have expected (and preferred) the "windows" buttons to appear in the top bar next to "session". Maybe even as separate buttons until there are too many to fit, and then replace them with that single button that you need to expand first.

W.r.t. the "mouse dragging problem", I now have found that I can only reproduce it with an existing session file (.viw file) that exhibits the problem.

Today I tested on a Windows 10 system and again when I copy the .viw file from the sessions directory from my Linux system to the Windows 10 system it immediately shows the same problem.
Copying the other files (settings.cfg.viw and Addresses.cdb) does not change anything, even with the "new" settings.cfg.viw and the copied .viw file in the sessions directory the problem is reproduced.

The same guy that moved these buttons around must have inverted "/export hide-sensitive" to "/export show-sensitive". Hopefully the did not hire an UX-expert - if I were in that position I would take my 5 things and run run run run :D

While we are discussing Winbox issues and improvements, it would be great to have the capability to (i) minimise the side bar to just the icons and (ii) expand to the icons + descriptive text, just like these left-hand sidebar examples from the new Chrome-based Windows Edge browser (also just like how it is in Google Cloud Console).

The technology is already present like Simple Mode / Advanced Mode on Wireless interface...

Somethig is badly wrong with this version, everytime I try to add side widgets such as cpu load, memory load, current time, etc., the app closes itself from taskbar.
Also it happens 10-20% of times when trying to minimize the window to taskbar.
I've cleaned %appdata%/roaming/Mikrotik and I've also netinstalled my hap ac2 with 7.1rc2, there is a bug in the code I believe.

After all these crashes, the router remains with hanged sessions which are impossible to clear without a reboot:

icsterm, is this happening on v7.1rc2 or at least v7? I have already reported this behavior (SUP-58300, Stalled entries in active Winbox session list & wrong session removed from session list on logout) - reproduced and will be fixed. Not only after crashes, after all disconnects.

I only upgraded since 7.1rc1, it's an older bug for sure (I've not tested 3.28 nor previous 7.x builds).
Couting my sessions it seems that indeed, disconnecting does not clear active sessions.

Request delay on start. I have happening when I double click the line in the list of devices in Winbox that I often happens that the second click also clicks a menu button on the left in main Winbox screen. The result is that for example theMake support.rifor any other button that is positioned under the mouse cursor.

Or you could put the Exit button at the bottom, and Windows just below New WinBox. You could also consider better optimization when using Zoom In, for example I use Zoom in to the maximum.
Also the scroll seems to remain a mystery in the application (in certain areas only), this makes me sad :-(

I found an issue in winbox 3.29. when you upload a file into "File List" window into some directory, file name comes with full path. but when you change the file's directory it will remain the same. unless you reopen the "File List" window.

in my test i changed un-befor-migration.tar file into skins and returning back to rook directory.
